Small in Pocket Size 

The Alcatel Y900 LTE Hotspot is comparatively small and compact and weighs only 88 grams including the battery, considerably less than current smartphones. The body is made entirely of plastic, and is possible to remove the back to insert the battery, SIM card and a memory card. The Alcatel Y900 doesn’t have a display, instead, decorated with large LED which strips the front. The used mobile communications technology (2G, 3G, 4G) is signaled with lateral LEDs. In the test, the LED display made a good figure, with displaying consumed data volume, battery status and time spent online.

Fast Internet over LTE Cat6

The modem in Alcatel Y900 Hotspot supports speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s downstream and up to 50 Mbit/s upload speeds on the 4G mobile network. The LTE Advanced Cat6 has been activated at some locations in Europe and the tariff also allows these high speeds. Of course, the router is also backwards compatible with the previous LTE Stages Cat3 and Cat4, also of course, UMTS (3G) and GSM (2G) are supported. In the test under Telekom network, the speeds of almost 200 Mbit/s downstream and 50 Mbit/s in the upload can be achieved, which is very good compared with similar devices, even if the technical maximum speed was not reached initially. Which is important for many applications is latency when tested between 20 and 35 milliseconds in the LTE network of Telefónica O2. The Aircard 810s could achieve up to 600 Mbit/s in the downlink - no other mobile LTE hotspot on the market could reach this speed currently. Depending on the configuration, the device can be operated at different speeds in LTE Cat11 mode or LTE mode CAT9. Galaxy S7 Edge Appearance

The camera should have been significantly improved compared to the Galaxy S6 edge again. The aperture of F1.7 promises particularly good photos in low light, so for example at dusk. The resolution is only 12 megapixels for photos. Nevertheless, the picture quality will be better, because the individual pixels are larger. Videos can be further incorporated with 4K resolution.   Compared to the Galaxy S6 edge, the camera of the Galaxy S7 edge stands out barely out of the case, it looks much better.

ZyXEL offers the cheap LTE-Advanced Cat6 Hotspot WAH7706 in January 2016. You can get the small portable LTE router with replaceable battery, which can reach up to 300 Mbit/s download speed. Up to 32 devices can be connected via the integrated WLAN ac simultaneously with an internet connection. The ZyXEL WAH7706 is in direct competition with other vendors such as Huawei, Netgear and Alcatel one touch. Today, we will have a look at what’s the key features of the new ZyXEL WAH7706 mobile hotspot.

  The ZyXEL WAH7706 LTE Hotspot is packed in a nondescript cardboard box. In addition to the router, a USB to microUSB cable can be found in the packaging, with which the battery can be recharged. There is also a good guide that contains all the instructions and information for controlling the WAH7706 and through many images is easy to understand. Unfortunately (but maybe only in my tester is the case) the instructions in English, and a power adapter is not included, so you need to use to an existing power supply with USB connector and the USB cable to charge the WAH7706 from PC. But it should not be a big problem because most users should always have at least one suitable power supply from their mobile phone at home.  

At first glance, the ZyXEL WAH7706 appears quite small and compact. At the sides, the device is flat, so the router is very well in hand. Overall, however, the design is very spectacular and the mirrored front is more disruptive than helpful, especially when it comes to read the small or low-light display on the front. There is the micro-USB port, so you can not connect an external LTE antenna. But you can remove and replace the rear battery, which is also not so necessarily common. The SIM card should be present in the MicroSIM format, but a nano-sim with adapter is also no problem.

LTE-Advanced Cat6

The ZyXEL WAH7706 is one of the fastest LTE router on the market, the modem allows speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s downstream and up to 50 Mbit/s upstream via LTE Category 6. The internet connection was very stable and reliable in the test, presumably a chipset from Qualcomm works in WAH7706. In Telekom's LTE network in 1800 MHz, data rates up to 200 Mbit/s could be achieved, the latency was up to 20 milliseconds in the Vodafone LTE network. Both readings are of course highly individual and depend on various external factors, ie there are some large deviations upwards and downwards. The ZyXEL WAH7706 supports LTE bands 3, 7, 8, 20, 28 and 38 and can be used in addition to LTE, and of course UMTS and GSM networks. The use abroad is no problem, only in North America there may be restrictions on multiple vendors, as there usually different frequency ranges are used. It is generally advisable to look before buying, which frequency bands are required, if the router is to be taken more often when traveling to other countries.  

Thus the fast LTE Cat6 connection arrives and including connected terminals, of course, a powerful wireless radio module is necessary. The ZyXEL WAH7706 here offers dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, thus allowing simultaneous operation at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. This is in view of the comparatively low price is not self-evident and therefore definitely worth a praise! Up to 32 devices can be connected simultaneously via WLAN with the Hotspot, which is very powerful than other similar devices. As we know, most LTE mobile hotspot could support only 10 or more to 15 wireless terminals simultaneously. The similar model Huawei E5786 is integrated a wireless extender or repeater, unfortunately this function is not available in WAH7706.    

The battery has a capacity of 2800 mAh and is easily replaceable by the user. According to ZyXEL, the WAH7706 provides thus an operating time of approximately 10 hours. The device was posted permanently in noisy environments in LTE network and has passed an Internet radio stream via WLAN. What positively noticed in connection with the battery: the appliance heats up despite persistent use only minimal, which is quite an advantage over comparable devices. The chipset seems generally to consume little energy and be mature.

The setup and configuration of ZyXEL WAH7706 takes place via the web interface, which you easily can access by entering the IP address of the router from any browser. The web interface is simple modern decor and reacts very fast. The home page offers all important information at a glance, such as the used volume of data or the number of connected devices. There is also of course all the information about the battery status, and network technology.   The menu item "Internet" can be operated on request through only in LTE, UMTS or GSM network. In addition, of course, you can adjust the access data (APN) individually, provided that the device has not been automatically entered the correct data. Through the "Data Usage", user can store a data limit and get notified when it exceeds a certain limit, not to exceed approximately disposable in the collective volume. SMS can be sent and received, of course also, even contacts can be stored in a phone book. If a memory card is inserted, you can use the ZyXEL WAH7706 as a file server.    

The ZyXEL WAH7706 is a very good mobile LTE hotspot. In the test, the device was able to impress with a long battery life and a fast and stable Internet connection. Also, the web interface is fast, easy to use and has many features. A drawback may be the lack of connections for an external antenna for some users.    

As an alternative, other vendors also provide LTE category 6 mobile hotspot, such as Alcatel Y900, Netgear AC790s and Huawei E5786, but all of them are more expensive than WAH7706.  

We had introduced the first generation Osprey MiFi last year and now the second generation comes out and it’s named EE Osprey II (or Osprey 2) Mini router. It’s customized by the network provider EE in UK. Also like Osprey MiFi, it’s also from the vendor Alcatel One Touch. The first Osprey MiFi comes from the factory model Alcatel Y855and now the Osprey 2 comes from the Alcatel Y853.

Frankly speaking, the two Osprey MiFi are similar on appearance and even functions. The Osprey 2 MiFi also has a SIM card slot, with a valid SIM card, user can access internet freely. Up to 10 wireless terminals could connect to the Osprey 2 and surf. The Osprey 2 mini router is in pocket size and user can take it easily in hand or pocket. It’s a good partner for business men or traveler to take it around the world.   The colors of Osprey 2 router is very attractive, in black body and colorful round edge. On the top size, the EE logo is printed and the LEDs show the strength of the network signal which is connected to. It also shows the 3G or 4G connection and if you have any SMS messages on the account. On the back sticker, we can see the model number, WiFi name and password for WiFi.   The Osprey 2 mini router could support peak download speed to 100mbps and upload speed to 50mbps on LTE networks available. It could support LTE network on frequency band 3, 7 and 20 (800/1800/2600Mhz), which means it could work well with almost all the countries in Europe and Asia. Sometimes, if the LTE/4G network is not available, it will automatically switch to 3G UMTS networks. With DC-HSPA+ technology, the peak download speed could reach 42mbps. The WiFi work on 802.11 b/g/n on single band 2.4GHz, 5GHz band is just missed.

The Alcatel Y853 will still use the micro SIM to get network. The battery capacity is 1500mAh, which is just enough for one day use. Here now, there are many 4G mobile hotspot with large power volume, such as Huawei E5770. The Alcatel Y853 is just OK for usual life. If you want to extend the working time, a mobile power bank may be necessary and this will be a good solution for the Osprey 2 battery concern.

What amazing is that the Netgear had presented the LTE Category 6 mobile hotspots to public. Many customers are already using the new LTE Cat6 router. The model number is Netgear Aircard 790s. If you had used the Aircard 782S, you may found the two 4G mobile hotspot looks very similar. It’s the first impression at a glance. They are both introduced by Australian network provider Telstra. The Netgear AC782S is also named Telstra 4G WiFi Advanced while the Aircard 790s is named Telstra 4G WiFi Advanced II. Appearance   Even though the Aircard 790s and 782s look similar, there are obvious model named printed on the device. The 4G Advanced is on the 782s and 4G Advanced II on the 790s. There is no doubt that the Aircard 790s is in higher price than 782s because AC79S is in higher specifications and better performance. For most users, the Netgear Aircard 782s is enough for common use on daily life, but if you want to surf in amazing speed, Netgear Aircard 790s would be better. But first of all, user must make sure the LTE category 6 carrier aggregation is already available at your location.  

Huawei E5 Mobile WiFi family have new members in the past year. Except the hot Huawei E5786 LTE Category 6 mobile hotspot, we also got the Huawei E5577 and E5573 4G LTE Category 4 mobile hotspot. Huawei E5577 and E5573 are both LTE mobile hotspots based on LTE Category 4, so they could both support the peak download speed to 150Mbps and upload speed to 50mbps on FDD-LTE networks. While on TD-LTE network, the peak download speed to 112mbps and upload speed to 10Mbps. And they both support up to 11 wireless terminals to access internet simultaneously. Similarly, the 3G UMTS/DC-HSPA+ and GSM/EDGE networks are backward. And the speed on DC-HSPA+ network could reach 43.2Mbps, which is good for most users.

Huawei E5573 and E5577 both have the connectors for external antennas. From the technical specifications, we can see the two mobile hotspot are too similar that we believe the manufacturer Huawei just re-design the appearance to distinguish them. The core data are kept same for markets demands. So if you are interested in them, we can only tell the Huawei E5577 is more user-friendly. Other features are very similar that you can ignore.
